UOIT is a member of Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computer Network (SHARCNET), a high-performance computing consortium of 14 universities, two colleges and a research institute based in south-central Ontario. A high-speed optical network connects the computing facilities located at each institution. SHARCNET was successful in the Canada Foundation for Innovation's 2014 Innovation Fund competition ($48.3 million), which resulted in a significant expansion of the facility. SHARCNET is currently ranked No. 224 on the list of top high-performance computing facilities in the world (June 2009).
